With the arrival of my second son in October, I knew that training time was going to get even tighter than it was. With that in mind, I wanted to leave myself with as few excuses as possible not to ride. While I have never shied away from cold weather riding, the prospect of the cold and WET has often left me making alternative plans.   As the days grow shorter and cooler, and the leaves start to drop, most of our competitive seasons have come to a close for 2010. While a few late season marathons or warm-weather triathlons remain, most of you have recently completed your last target race of the year. After a full year of training and racing, you likely have some of your best fitness, but you may be mentally burnt out and 2011 is just too far off to start training for. So what to do now?

Duathlons are multi-sport events that usually follow a format of run-bike-run.  The term "duathlon" was coined to differentiate these events from biathlon, an already-established winter Olympic sport involving cross country skiing and rifle shooting.  Distances can very from short, fast "sprint" races to ultra endurance events such as Powerman.  They can even be off-road affairs with trail running and mountain biking.
